Acting Head in Homegrown Drama

This past week saw the release of the Vancouver-set indie film Mount Pleasant, starring Ben Ratner, The OC‘s Kelly Rowan, and… our very own Acting Head of Department, Bill Marchant.

In this ensemble drama, writer-director Ross Weber set out to tackle issues of class, poverty, addiction, and Vancouver’s favourite topic of all: real estate!

Bill’s thoughts on working on the film?

“ Working on Mount Pleasant was a true joy. I really think it is this kind of film that will give Vancouver a much needed boost in the international market. It’s unapologetic about its Canadian-ness and yet never surrenders to that kind of self-conscious navel gazing that cripples so much of our creative output. I think it is just a stunning film. Dark and gritty and funny as hell make for a pretty potent combination.”

And what about the process for you as an actor?

“Ross is great with his actors; he gave us so much freedom to play. It was how you always dream it might be : a great script, great actors and inspired direction that allows you the opportunity to really dig in and find the deeper truth. Very subtle and soft-spoken, Ross is a master at clearing away the bullshit and getting to the heart of the matter.”

Fans of Bill’s – and of, you know, supporting homegrown Canadian flicks – go check out Mount Pleasant. Though be warned: I don’t know if this is the right choice for Valentine’s Day…
