Crazy Enough, a title sequence created in Digital Design by Jorge R. Canedo Estrada, is a Motion Graphics finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards! (View all finalists here.)
Among other things, as a finalist, Jorge will get to go to the Awards Event in Beijing this October.
The video’s madcap style prompted an avalanche of praise when Jorge – who came to VFS as one of our VFS/YouTube Scholarship winners – first posted it on Vimeo. The ADAA love is well-deserved. See Crazy Enough for yourself:
Not long ago, we had the pleasure of visiting Vancouver’s Image Engine, the company responsible for many of the 600-odd visual effects shots in District 9. While we were there, we got to sit down with a few of the 3D Animation & Visual Effects graduates who worked on the film. We shot 6 interviews in all, representing both “old-school” VFS grads from the late ’90s as well as more recent alumni. We kick it off with Visual Effects Executive Producer Shawn Walsh. (For more about him, check out his IMDB profile.) Enjoy! And here’s what we have in store for the coming days: September 2 – Bernhard Kimbacher, VFX Data Coordinator/Compositor (IMDB) Stay tuned!
And it looks like that year of intense work is paying off. With the help of her classmates, Cookie recently organized a successful event for Hip Hop Dance Canada, which then allowed for her to take part in the “Olympics” of hip hop dance in Las Vegas: the World Hip Hop Championship. And the momentum is still building. She gave us some insight into what inspired her to start a career in event planning, and her role in these world-class dance events. Hi, Cookie. Could you start off by talking about your background? What lead you to this field? Cookie: I have been primarily a dancer for the past 15 years, and a choreographer for the past 8. I’ve always loved the stage and performing. Back in high school, my main career goal was to become a professional triple threat performer. That all changed when I became the Youth Communications Program Director for my youth group, CFC-Youth For Christ (CFC-YFC). We needed to create a fundraising event that would create awareness for the organization that we support, ANCOP (Answering the Cry Of the Poor) International Canada, and draw the attention of youths in the Lower Mainland. Since my background was in dance, I proposed a dance competition, and the event became an annual fundraiser for CFC-YFC. I was also very much involved with my aunt’s dance school, Praise TEAM, where I taught dance and eventually started helping out in an administrative role. During this time, I was trying to find ways in which I could help the dance school grow, so I enrolled in the Entertainment Business Management program so that I could be more informed on how to run an entertainment business. How did you first hook up with Hip Hop Dance Canada?
David also animated on Robert Rodriguez’s Shorts, which came out last week. Pretty good run! Together, that makes 10 straight weeks this summer of film releases featuring the work of VFS grads, representing nearly all of our programs. How’s that for a blockbuster season? The streak goes on hiatus next week, but then it picks right back up in early September with some high-profile movies, and things explode again in October, November, and December. To recap: 6/26 – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Watch David Yabu’s animated film from VFS

It was a year ago this month that Classical Animation grad Choom Lam took the coveted Best Student Film award at New York’s Animation Block Party festival. Part of the prize was a production grant to make a PSA for this year’s fest. Well, the time has come and her work unveiled. Take a peek! Watch Choom Lam’s VFS films:
Anthony graduated from 3D Animation & Visual Effects at VFS in early 2007 and has already seen a lot of the Vancouver industry, with stints at Vanguard Animation, Rainmaker, MPC, and Image Engine. Since wrapping District 9, he’s headed back to MPC, where he’s working on Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Julianna graduated just a few months before Anthony, and has already established herself not just as an in-demand freelancer for visual effects, but as a conceptual artist – her work with well-known character designer Aaron Sims has included designs for the likes of X-Men Origins: Magneto and Clash of the Titans among many others. Here’s what they each had to say about the District 9 experience: On Working with Fellow VFS Grads Julianna: It’s always great meeting former students since we’re able to relate to the work process we went through as students, but now we can elaborate and expand our methods into a studio pipeline to become more efficient. Studio environments are pretty similar to VFS, so having old friends around makes it that much more relaxing and familiar. Anthony: It was great working with people I know from school. I have worked with people from VFS at every studio I have been a part of. It’s really nice to see how far we have all come in a very short time. The people from VFS that I consistently work with all have an amazing work ethic and are those same people who I remember working many all-nighters with back in the Ant Farm. Anthony: The stuff I had the most fun with were the riot footage shots. Inserting the aliens into stock riot footage of actual events and making it look like the aliens were reacting to things like riot police shooting shotguns was very challenging. Julianna: Being part of the look development team, we had to decide on the colours, patterns, and materials of each part of the alien. When working on the textures, there were challenges with creating a variety of patterns to individualize each character while creating specific maps to build the look we wanted for the body. For every section of the character, extensive work was done to the colour, bump, dirt, subsurface, alphas, displacement, and spec maps. I used a more procedural technique for the overall patterns, creating different alphas to apply to specific colour maps which could generate diverse looking aliens. Clothing modifications, war paint, and stickers were also used in this process. Seeing the final shots was truly rewarding. After trial and error, it was great to see everything come together so well. VFX in Vancouver Julianna: Hopefully [District 9] means bigger projects with more creature work coming to Vancouver. It’s really impressive how Image Engine, The Embassy, and Zoic Studios handled the workload while achieving quality results. It’s a true testament of what Vancouver has to offer, which can only mean bigger opportunities to further show what this city is capable of. Anthony: I think the future of Vancouver in the effects world is very bright. Studios like MPC, Image Engine, and Frantic Films are not only getting work on big movies but are showing that Vancouver talent can produce creature animation and effects that stand up alongside the work being done in California and London.
