Writing Grad’s ‘Amazon Falls’ Premieres at TIFF

Writing for Film & Television graduate Curry Hitchborn had two weeks to pen Amazon Falls, a feature-length script shot and co-produced by B-movie actor-turned-director Katrin Bowen.

A director of many of VFS Writing department “Port Shorts”, Katrin met Curry during his year at VFS and turned to him when a previous feature had fallen apart shortly before production was scheduled to begin.

Curry drew upon Katrin’s early experiences as a tall, kick-boxing actress in Hollywood’s B-movie scene and churned out a screenplay while casting and pre-production were already in progress.

“This has got to be the fastest concept-to-turnaround in recorded history,” Curry says in this behind-the-scenes video featurette. “It was two weeks straight of non-stop writing. I put my entire life on hold.”

Soon, a high-profile cast came together including former Miss Canada April Telek, Ben Ratner, Gabrielle Rose, and William B. Davis (who also starred in this VFS Writing department Port Short directed by Katrin).

Amazon Falls has been playing at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) all week. Here’s a blurb from the industry-leading festival’s official description of the film:

“Curry Hitchborn’s focused script provides no easy answers; instead, it probes the cost of the Hollywood dream in a society obsessed with celebrity.”

Congrats, Curry!
