The First-Ever VFS Student Game for the iPad

It was only a matter of time (and ingenuity) before Game Design students pulled together to tackle designing a game for a mobile, multi-touch device. Now, for the first time ever, you’ll be able to download a student-created game app from the iTunes store and play it on Apple’s iPad.

You might’ve seen the Faine’s Melody trailer on our YouTube channel earlier this week. We asked grad and team member Sharai Grant to give us some insight into the work that went into this groundbreaking student achievement. But first and foremost, here’s the team behind the game and the sleek trailer:

Sharai Grant, Project Manager & UI Designer
Steven Martin, Systems Designer
Christopher Ellington, Game Artist
Michel McBride-Charpentier, Technical Designer

What motivated your team to develop a game for the iPad?
Sharai: As a team we wanted to develop something different. The iPad was always our platform of choice, as we were fascinated by some of the great game mechanics that were already developed for the iPad. We were curious and excited to test those abilities for ourselves.

What were some of the unique challenges your team faced?
Sharai: When we first started the development cycle we took the little things for granted. The things that are usually built into the engine and are available for anyone to access like walking, for example. We underestimated how much time we needed to spend on things that, on the surface, seem minimal, but are the key to gameplay, like our unique set of gestures.

How are you trying to get this out in the world?
Sharai: We’re really excited to get this into the hands of others. It’s a unique game with a great concept that anyone would enjoy. Faine’s Melody is available in the iTunes app store, and we encourage iPad users to give it a try!
