Facebook Scavenger Hunt for a Seat in the Makeup Design Summer Intensive

Considering a career in Makeup Design for Film & Television? We’re offering a seat in the upcoming Makeup Design Summer Intensive (July 16-20, 2012), and all it takes from you is a keen eye for hunting details.

VFS Timeline Trivia is an online scavenger hunt where clues are hidden on Vancouver Film School’s Makeup Design for Film & Television’s Facebook brand timeline. You will be asked to correctly answer questions based on items found on Vancouver Film School’s Makeup Design for Film & Television’s Facebook brand timeline.

The eligible fastest three contestants that successfully complete the online scavenger hunt by answering and entering the questions correctly will be entered into a draw, and the winner will be selected randomly from those three contestants. The contest begins today and ends on Friday, 5pm PST. To enter, go to the Contest App on the Makeup Design Facebook page and fill in your details.

You must be 17 years of age or older, and able to attend the Summer Intensive in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Good luck!

Win Tickets to Projecting Change 2012 Documentary Workshop

Now that you can film and edit video on your phone, potentially everyone is a documentary filmmaker; in many ways, the internet was practically designed for short-form, documentary films. Vancouver Film School and Project Change 2012, a film festival dedicated to social and environmental change, want to send two lucky winners to both a Documentary Workshop and a screening of Miss Representation.

At the Documentary Workshop participants will explore the way social media and crowdfunding are changing production budgets, and examine developing the most important part of a documentary – its story. Miss Representation, which premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network in October, explores the objectification and sexualization of females in the media.

To enter, simply retweet the following:

RT to enter to win tickets for @pcffvancouver’s Doc Workshop and screening of Miss Representation from @vfs http://ow.ly/ajFYJ #PCFF2012

If you don’t win, you can still attend the workshop – anyone who signs up receives a complimentary pass to Miss Representation. Winners will be determined by a random draw. Contest ends Wednesday, April 18, at 12pm.

Good luck!

SoundCloud Community Picks a Winner!

The SoundCloud and VFS Full Scholarship Challenge started with hundreds of entries from all over the world, and included sounds that represented the birth of an idea, a post-apocalyptic landscape, the colour red, an imaginary animal being born, or falling in love, for the chance at a scholarship to Sound Design for Visual Media. Once we narrowed those down to a top ten, it was up to SoundCloud users to determine the winner – and by a wide margin they chose Gordon McGladdery’s track of an imaginary animal being born!

How did he create his winning, and very disturbing, track? Well, in Gordon’s own words, “by manipulating a sample of a Cicada I recorded in South Korea and a sample a friend recorded of a baby goat being slaughtered in Sierre Leone (been waiting for a reason to use that!) along with minimal instrumentation in Ableton Live.”

If you hang onto sounds like those, you must be destined to be a sound designer.

Coming in second and third, and receiving a $10,000 scholarship each, were Jonas Obermüller and Herve Carpentier.

Congratulations, Gordon, Jonas, and Herve!

Update: Click here to check out our interview with Gordon upon his arrival at VFS.

Choose the Winner! SoundCloud and VFS Full Scholarship Challenge

When we started the SoundCloud and VFS Full Scholarship Challenge, we couldn’t have anticipated the response: hundreds of entries from all over the world, exploring the birth of an imaginary animal, falling in love, the spark of an idea, the colour red, and a post-apocalyptic landscape.

Once the entries were in, a team of judges from VFS and SoundCloud, including the Head of Sound Design for Visual Media, Shane Rees, picked a list of ten finalists, no easy task given the quantity and quality of entries.

Now it’s your turn – your vote determines the winner of the Full Scholarship Challenge! Go to vfs.com/soundcloud, listen to the finalists’ entries, and pick your winner. The final ten represent a remarkable selection from around the world, from Mexico to France, Germany to Australia, to Canada and the U.S.

Voting is open until December 13, 2011, so don’t delay!

Here Be Dragons – Enter for a Chance to Win Skyrim!

As we mentioned earlier, Game Design Expo 2012 features Bruce Nesmith, the Director of Design behind the most talked-about game of the year, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, just one of the many speakers brought to Vancouver by Game Design and VFS. Several aspects of the game have become trends in their own right, whether it’s placing buckets on people’s heads, or the more courageous fighting of dragons, mammoths, and giants…all at the same time. And the critics agree – Skyrim is currently sitting at a 96 on Metacritic, otherwise known as “Universal Acclaim”.

If that sounds like your thing, enter to win a copy of Skyrim by tweeting the following message: “Buy a ticket to @gamedesignexpo before Nov. 25 and you can win a copy of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim http://ow.ly/7uoEt @vfs #gaming #contest”

This contest is now over. A winner will be announced Monday, November 28.

As the tweet says, if you’ve already bought a ticket to Game Design Expo you’ve been entered not once, but twice for this contest. Need tickets? You can buy them here!
